Enabling Application Innovation by

Celebrating IBM i's
30th anniversary at the
RPG & DB2 Summit
RPG & DB2 Summit provides the skills that developers
need for today and tomorrow's applications
ystem i Developer's mission is to address the
growing skills gap among application developers
in IBM i shops. Over 10 years ago, founding partners Jon Paris, Susan Gantner and Paul Tuohy-themselves application developers-began to find it increasingly difficult to find the in-depth, practical information
that RPG developers needed to modernize their skills.
So the RPG & DB2 Summit was born-a twice annual
event specifically targeting IBM i application developers. The goal of the Summit is simple: Help RPG
developers gain the skills they need to keep up with
modern business requirements.
RPG and Db2 for i have undergone enormous enhancements in recent years, but many RPGers have
been unable to keep pace with these changes on their
own. The Summit provides the opportunity to learn
how to best exploit the latest technologies.
With its four dedicated IBM i development tracks,
attendees tell us that the Summit is "the perfect size
and shape." All meat, no fluff.
Database modernization and enhancing the RPG
code base with free form, ILE and SQL, creates a
strong base from which to innovate. The Summit also
covers topics many people don't realize RPG applications can do, such as generate and process XML and
JSON; provide and consume web services; and even
interact with IBM's Watson technology.
Despite the name, the Summit doesn't shy away
from other languages and technologies that can enhance and strengthen existing and new IBM i applications. At the Summit, attendees can learn modern
open-source languages such as Python, PHP and
Node.js from an RPGer's viewpoint.

Hot topics at recent RPG & DB2 Summits included
Git and the growing IBM i open-source community,
where RPGers can find open-source code or participate by providing open-source utilities of their own.
Just as importantly, the Summit is about building
community. The friendly and collaborative environment means attendees, speakers and exhibitors work
together, eat together and even play together. The contacts made with speakers and other developers during
this time are invaluable when they return home.
