The Moment You've
Been Waiting For
'll admit it-I'm not a very patient person. Hearing
Christmas music in October, countdown lists with more
than 100 days and elaborate lead-ups to far-off events
are definitely not among my favorite things.
Maybe you feel the same way about the wait for
IBM POWER9*. You've been hearing snippets about the
processor's cognitive and database workload capabilities
for months, and have been anxiously waiting to incorporate
POWER9 systems into your data center. And now, the
wait is over.
Whether you're looking to run AIX*, IBM i, Linux* or some
combination thereof, you'll find a box that fits your needs.
In this month's cover story, IBM Vice President Steve Sibley
speaks to the capabilities of the POWER9 chip and plans for
the IBM Power Systems* platform. Turn to page 14 to learn
more. Next, read about the key attributes and applications
for each new server on page 20. In "The Cloud Your Way" on
page 10, Ian Robinson, Power Virtualization offering manager,
explains how IBM PowerVM* virtualization preinstalled on
POWER9 makes it easier and more economical to deploy an
on-premises cloud strategy. And in "Making the Move" on
Whatever the Story Takes
Adam Oxford is a freelance journalist originally
from the U.K., but now based in Johannesburg. He's been covering the tech industry for
more than 20 years. That includes a stint at the
short-lived children's magazine Planet PC. It's
a surprisingly short step from there to writing
about the big data, healthcare and transport
policy projects at the local IBM lab. Read his
story on the latter subject on page 48.

page 24, IBM Lab Services experts walk clients through the
migration process-and explain what they can do to help.
Elsewhere in this issue, we profile 25 members of the 2018
Power Systems Champions class and learn what they're doing
to promote the platform in their companies and communities.
Read more on page 33. Lastly, we examine how the IBM
Research facility in Johannesburg is helping tackle challenges
and enable prosperity in the tip of Africa.
Good things are worth the wait-and that's certainly
the case with POWER9. Flip through this month's issue to
