Learning for the Future
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BOWMAN
n the past few months, I've attended several
conferences. While the subject matter has varied,
a common thread connects these disparate events.
Technology changes fast: What was once practically
science fiction is now on tap to be deployed in your data
center in 2018, and IBM Power Systems* clients are eager
to learn more about what's in store.
At the IBM i Driveway to Watson* event earlier this fall, users not
only learned about the tools that can help them connect to IBM
Watson technology, but also had opportunities for hands-on labs
with IBM experts to practice the skills they'd just learned. And at
the IBM Power Systems Technical University event in New Orleans,
users clamored to hear more about product announcements made
earlier that month, developments coming in 2018 and how to
implement new technologies that are already available.
But you don't have to leave the office to learn what's coming
for POWER* or how to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in
your organization. Turn to this month's cover story on page 12,
where Stefanie Chiras, vice president, IBM Cognitive Systems
Offering Management, shares what's on the horizon for the
Power Systems platform in 2018.
Ready to harness these trends for your organization? Turn to
page 16, where Sumit Gupta, vice president, IBM High Performance Computing, AI and Machine Learning, explains how
PowerAI can support clients' needs as they implement AI.
Jason Griego is an Austin,
Texas-based photographer. His
shots of IBM Vice President Stefanie
Chiras are featured on this month's
cover and in "Power Forward" on
page 12. When he's not on set,
Jason likes to run, garden, build
furniture and tend to the chickens.

Elsewhere in this issue, we examine what's new in
Power Systems education. Read about what's fueled the
exponential growth of the IBM Power Systems Academic
Initiative (PSAI) on page 20. Then turn to page 9, where
Manzoor Siddiqui, executive director of COMMON, explains
how the COMMON Education Foundation helps educate
the next generation of Power Systems users. These learning
opportunities aren't just for students, however. On page 5 we
explore how IBM's new conference, Think 2018, can help
keep your organization apprised of new innovations.
The IT landscape is changing fast-but you don't have to leave
your cubicle to stay on the cutting edge. Read on to learn about
the latest Power Systems trends.
