Power Systems in 2018?"
The Team Needs You!
Top Priorities for CIOs in 2018
Keeping up with ever-changing
bits and bytes is challenging,
especially for older (cough, cough)
technologists. However, with a
little study, a side hobby project or
two and a few enlightened friends,
it's possible to stay fresh and relevant-at least with technical skills.
In fact, I'd argue that keeping
up with technical skills is the
easy part. The bigger challenge is
learning and embracing the social
components and team dynamics in
play today. Today's technical world
is vastly more social, open and interactive, and virtually everything
revolves around the team.
For 2018, up your social game.
Be aware, be engaged and participate. Be more visible on social
media, attend local meetups or put
a hobby project on GitHub. Learn.
Teach. Share. The team needs you!
In 2018 CIOs around the globe will
focus on improving cybersecurity
and minimizing the risk of data
breaches. To do this, they will
augment their staff with experts,
consolidate vendors and harden
server security. With the growing realization that most security breaches result from poor configurations,
CIOs will turn to vendors that can
help identify their vulnerabilities.
PCI DSS, SWIFT, GDPR and other
compliance mandates have changes
coming in 2018 that will also drive
emphasis and spend in this area.
Retiring talent affects all areas of
IT, and the field is starting to realize
that modern tools are necessary to
attract new talent in development
and infrastructure. Members of
the younger workforce are digital
natives and sometimes we just need
to get out of the way.
