With Great Anticipation
love flipping through my calendar and eagerly looking
forward to what's coming down the pike. Christmas may
be half a year away, for instance, but you can bet that
I've already purchased a plane ticket to my hometown
and have bookmarked the Amazon wish lists of several
But that era of anticipation has drawn to a close for cognitive
systems, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, etc. These
technologies are here, and they're ready to be implemented in
your organization. IBM Watson* isn't just beating Ken Jennings
at "Jeopardy!" anymore; it's saving lives by helping doctors
match patients to clinical trials. Read more about that application-and many more instances where AI can benefit organizations-in this month's cover story on page 10.
IBM is ready for the cognitive era, and is changing the
way it solicits and implements feedback from clients to meet
changing needs. Read about how the Executive Advisory
Board has been revamped to address this new era on innovation on page 16.
Also in this month's issue, we examine the results of our
AIX* Security Survey. Turn to page 21 to read about your
peers' AIX security concerns, and the solutions they've
implemented as a result.
And on page 26, you'll find an in-depth look at the
decades-long battle between IBM Power Systems* and
Intel* x86, and why organizations have switched to
Power Systems time and time again.
Cognitive learning is no longer just a far-off blip on the
radar. Flip through this month's issue to learn how organizations are already using it to address myriad challenges-and
how POWER8* can help you do the same.

scenes. He shot portraits of Kimberly Storin and
Adel El-Hallak for this month's cover story on page

Lost and Found
Emily Peterson is the new copy editor for
IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems
edition. A recent transplant to Minneapolis, she
enjoys getting to know the city better through
weekend outings and wrong turns. She
carries her knitting with her everywhere she
goes, so there's always a sock to finish or
shawl to start if she gets too lost.
