PARTNER PoV Who Will SURVIVE? Tech industry consolidation can make you a winner or a loser have a confession to make: I am really old. So old, in fact, that early June of 2015 will mark the completion of my 50th year in IT. From punch card machines to current Power Systems* servers, I've sold it, bought it, programmed it and managed it. Another confession: I've also traded in the products of some IBM competitors that no longer exist. They vanished in the consolidation of our industry. I Jim Young is VP of sales at Midrange Performance Group. Along the way, I participated as a founder in seven start-up tech companies. So I think my perspective is unique, having been in our industry during early raging growth, its maturation and now the inevitable consolidation. In capitalism, consolidation is the natural outcome of maturing industries. It happened to steel, cars, telephony, airlines and a host of other industries. 8 // APRIL 2015 Winners and Losers Without government meddling, the market is going to pick winners and losers. That's how capital gets allocated to competing projects. The challenge for IT professionals is threefold: You must have the technical smarts to pick winning technologies, the business skills to evaluate competing products and companies, and the courage to back your decisions. The consolidation process has already picked a winner in mainframes, as there is only one manufacturer left. (Hint: its logo is blue.) But what about cloud solutions, Internet security or mobility? Hundreds (maybe thousands) of solutions exist in each of these product categories. Do we have any reason to think they will all be around for the rest of our careers? History tells us otherwise, particularly in the technology field.
