SNAPSHOT X RICHARD LYNCH Photography by Sara Stathas NAME: Richard Lynch TITLE: Lead UNIX administrator COMPANY: Regal Beloit, an electrical motor and components manufacturer HQ: Beloit, Wisconsin YEARS IN IT: 22 The biggest challenges my data center faces today are virtualization, managing growth, storage and backups/disaster recovery (DR). The trends affecting my work are virtualization, replication and DR in less than four hours. The next big thing for my business will be building custom motors based off of Web orders. This is comparable to Dell doing a custom PC for a customer. My favorite activity outside of work is spending time with my kids-watching them grow too fast-and also volunteering for the local volunteer fire department. My favorite part of the day is going home to see my family. My guilty pleasure is watching a movie while eating popcorn and M&Ms. The geekiest thing I've ever owned is my own AIX server in my basement. The superpower I wish I had is the ability to go back in time and fix all my mistakes! If I weren't in IT, I'd want to work as a firefighter/EMT. 32 // APRIL 2015 If I were stuck on a desert island, the one item I'd want is an iPhone with cell service. My favorite book is "The Sum of All Fears" or anything by Tom Clancy. The business skill I'd most like to acquire is more patience and better project management. My favorite musical artist is Maroon 5. My favorite IBM product is AIX* because it runs great, offers hundreds of applications and support is second to none. If money were no object, the one thing I'd purchase is a big house on a lake with a fast boat docked on my pier. The innovation that's made the biggest impact on my life is Google. I use it every day to solve life's mysteries or to fix IT issues. The best movie I've seen recently is "Gravity."
