IBM Perspective Power Systems directions Wisdom of Crowds ne of the key attributes of systems powering a smarter planet is they’re interconnected. The same holds true for people. The more we share our experiences, ideas, opinions and insights, the more our lives and our work are enriched. As IT professionals, our predecessors surely would envy the new tools for collaboration, making it fast, easy and inexpensive for any of us to spark conversations with peers across the industry. Of course, there’s no substitute for face-to-face encounters at events and conferences, but for most of us, these activities fill our calendars only a few days a year—at most. In contrast, the Internet is a global information exchange, operating 24-7. Here in the Power Systems* realm, the most significant changes in the past five years have been in the growth of online communities and the capability to share experiences and expertise through social media. The IBM developerWorks* website, for example, had more than 6 million visitors in 2011, and is an excellent source of information about AIX* and UNIX* ( com/developerworks/aix), IBM i (www. and Linux* ( linux). It’s a great place to participate in technical forums and seek the “wisdom of crowds” to help solve a problem or tap into experts’ knowledge. Where else, for example, would you be able to hear Federico Kereki, a systems engineer O from Uruguay, talking about AIX SSH locks? We’ve encouraged our IBM experts to participate in these online conversations—not only on developerWorks, but also through industry blogs and on Twitter. As a result, IBMers from our hardware, software and services teams are sharing insights and practical experience regularly with clients worldwide. champion). The IBM Champions program recognizes professionals outside IBM—including IT architects, developers and business leaders—who contribute to the Power community by leading user groups, blogging and tweeting, participating in forums and online discussions, writing technical articles and more. We’re seeking nominations for new IBM Champions to be announced later this year. If you follow Twitter, you may already recognize Nicolette McFadden (@NicoletteMcF), our most prolific Power* technology tweeter. And we recently announced 14 IBM Champions for Power Systems ( can submit your nominations on the IBM Champions website. I want to thank everybody who is participating in our online communities.
