Next What’s new in R&D Powerful Research The EDISON project looks to lower auto emissions and increase renewable-energy use By Jim Utsler A So while no- or low-emission vehicles and renewable sources of energy may be panaceas of sorts, many issues persist. That’s in part why Denmark is leading a consortium of organizations that includes IBM, DONG Energy, Siemens and the Danish Energy 32 AUGUST 2011 Association, among others, that’s collaborating on the EDISON project. Short for Electric Vehicles in a Distributed and Integrated Market using Sustainable Energy and Open Networks, EDISON is being piloted on the Danish island of Bornholm, which relies heavily ILLUSTRATION COURTESY OF IBM RESEARCH-ZURICH lthough the introduction of electric and semielectric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and GM’s Chevy Volt mark a turn in how everyday vehicles will be powered, they also present some challenges, most notably where all of the electricity they demand will come from. Traditional coal- or gas-powered electrical generators can do the job, but at a cost, including overloaded grids and power-generation greenhouse-gas emissions. ¶ Renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, can address the latter but not necessarily the former. When the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, electricity is being generated. But when it’s cloudy or calm, there may not be enough electricity available to charge, and therefore power, electric vehicles.
